RBI's Revelation: Unveiling the Withdrawal of the 2000 Note from Circulation

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had announced the withdrawal of ₹2000 denomination banknotes from circulation vide Press Release 2023-2024/257 dated May 19, 2023 .The status of withdrawal of ₹2000 banknotes is periodically published by the RBI. The last press release in this regard was published on April 01, 2025 .

2. The facility for deposit and / or exchange of the ₹2000 banknotes was available at all bank branches in the country upto October 07, 2023.

3. The facility for exchange of the ₹2000 banknotes is available at the 19 Issue Offices of the Reserve Bank (RBI Issue Offices)1 since May 19, 2023. From October 09, 2023, RBI Issue Offices are also accepting ₹2000 banknotes from individuals / entities for deposit into their bank accounts. Further, members of the public are sending ₹2000 banknotes through India Post from any post office within the country, to any of the RBI Issue Offices for credit to their bank accounts.

4. The total value of ₹2000 banknotes in circulation, which was ₹3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal of ₹2000 banknotes was announced, has declined to ₹6,266 crore at the close of business on April 30, 2025. Thus, 98.24% of the ₹2000 banknotes in circulation as on May 19, 2023, have since been returned.

5. The ₹2000 banknotes continue to be legal tender.

భారతీయ రిజర్వ్ బ్యాంక్ (ఆర్బీఐ) 2023-2024/257 నంబరు ప్రెస్ రిలీజు ద్వారా 2023 మే 19న ₹2000 నోట్లు ప్రచారంలో నుండి ఉపసంహరించడాన్ని ప్రకటించింది. ₹2000 నోట్ల ఉపసంహరణ స్థితిని ఆర్బీఐ తరచుగా వెల్లడిస్తున్నది. ఈ సంబంధంగా చివరి ప్రెస్ రిలీజు 2025 ఏప్రిల్ 01న విడుదలైంది.

2. దేశంలోని అన్ని బ్యాంక్ శాఖలలో ₹2000 నోట్లను జమ చేయడం / మార్పిడి చేయడం కోసం సౌకర్యం 2023 అక్టోబర్ 07 వరకు అందుబాటులో ఉంది.

3. 2023 మే 19 నుండి దేశంలోని 19 ఆర్బీఐ ఇష్యూ కార్యాలయాల్లో ₹2000 నోట్ల మార్పిడి సౌకర్యం అందుబాటులో ఉంది. 2023 అక్టోబర్ 09 నుండి, ఆర్బీఐ ఇష్యూ కార్యాలయాలు వ్యక్తులు / సంస్థల నుండి ₹2000 నోట్లను వారి బ్యాంక్ ఖాతాలలో జమ చేయడం కోసం కూడా స్వీకరిస్తున్నాయి. అంతేకాకుండా, ప్రజలు దేశంలోని ఏదైనా పోస్టాఫీస్ నుండి ఇండియా పోస్టు ద్వారా ఆర్బీఐ ఇష్యూ కార్యాలయాలకు ₹2000 నోట్లను పంపించి తమ బ్యాంక్ ఖాతాలో జమ చేయించుకుంటున్నారు.

4. ₹2000 నోట్ల ఉపసంహరణ ప్రకటించబడిన 2023 మే 19న వ్యాపార ముగింపు సమయానికి ప్ర‌చారంలో ఉన్న మొత్తం విలువ ₹3.56 లక్షల కోట్లుగా ఉంది. అదే 2025 ఏప్రిల్ 30న వ్యాపార ముగింపు సమయానికి ₹6,266 కోట్లకు తగ్గింది. అంటే, 2023 మే 19న ప్ర‌చారంలో ఉన్న ₹2000 నోట్లలో 98.24% వాటిని తిరిగి సమర్పించారని అర్థం.

5. ₹2000 నోట్లు ఇంకా చట్టబద్ధమైన నోట్లు (లీగల్ టెండర్)గానే కొనసాగుతున్నాయి.
